What’s Better for Back Pain: Acupuncture or Massage? (Let’s Learn the Difference!)
Rosemarie Allen • April 9, 2025

Have you (or someone you love) ever had back pain? It can happen from sitting too long, lifting something heavy, or even just sleeping in a funny position. But don’t worry — there are ways to help your back feel better!

Today, we’re going to talk about two common ways to treat back pain: acupuncture and massage. Which one is better? Let’s explore both!

🌀 What About Chronic Back Pain?

Sometimes, back pain doesn’t go away quickly — it sticks around for weeks or even months. That’s called chronic back pain. It can make daily life harder and may need special care to manage well.

Good news: acupuncture, massage (Tuina), and cupping therapy can all help reduce chronic pain, improve how you move, and lower your stress. A combination of treatments may work best for long-term relief.

✳️ What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a special kind of treatment that started in ancient China. It uses tiny, hair-thin needles placed in certain spots on your body. These spots are like “energy highways” that help your body stay balanced and feel better.

Fun Fact: According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), acupuncture can reduce back pain by relaxing tight muscles and improving blood flow. It also helps your brain release “feel-good” chemicals called endorphins!

At A Balanced You, our trained acupuncturists use this safe and gentle method to help your back heal naturally.

🗣️ Review Section:
"I love this place. Dr. Allen is one of the kindest, most caring people I have ever met in my life. She treats you with such care, and truly values how you’re feeling. Also, the pain relief from the acupuncture has allowed me to exercise for the first time in many months. The office staff is wonderful is well. I highly recommend" — S.N

🫱🏼‍🫲🏽 What is Massage (Tuina)?

Massage is when someone uses their hands to press, rub, or move muscles to help you feel better. We use a special kind of massage called Tuina (twee-nah). It’s a type of medical massage used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Tuina Helps:

  • Loosen tight muscles
  • Move joints more easily
  • Reduce swelling or pain

Studies show that massage helps lower back pain and improve movement (Mayo Clinic, Journal of Pain Research).

🗣️ Review Section:
"Rosemarie is amazing. She cares deeply about the people she works with and is amazingly knowledgeable and talented. She understands the body's multiple types of connections - physiological, emotional, spiritual, and is able to identify not only where your problems lie, but addresses them in multiple ways. I only had a one-hour
Tui-Na massage but cannot wait for another, or perhaps acupuncture to deal with some of the physical pain I have developed.

Highest of recommendations for one-time or continuous therapy!" — T.G

🌪️ What is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping uses round cups placed on your back to gently lift the skin and muscles. This helps:

  • Increase blood flow
  • Reduce tension
  • Promote healing

Cupping might leave round marks, but they go away in a few days. This method has been used for thousands of years to help the body heal.

🗣️ Review Section:
"Excellent Service every time i had the cupping service and i really enjoyed it, I will be getting it again, Dr Rosemarie is very attentive and professional love this lady she is very people oriented." — W.J.

So... Which One is Better?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some people feel better with acupuncture. Others love massage. And many feel best with a combination!

At A Balanced You Acupuncture & Wellness Center, we often combine:

  • ✅ Acupuncture
  • ✅ Tuina Medical Massage
  • ✅ Cupping Therapy

Why? Because teamwork helps your back heal faster and feel stronger — especially if your pain is chronic.
