A Super Easy Trick to Feel Calm During the Holidays
Rosemarie Allen • December 17, 2024

The holidays can be so much fun! You get to see family, eat yummy treats, and maybe even open presents. But sometimes, all the planning, shopping, and running around can make you feel stressed, like there’s just too much to do.

Guess what? There’s a magical little trick you can do to help yourself feel calm, and it’s right on your ear! It’s called the Shen Men point, and it’s super easy to use.

What is the Shen Men Point?

Think of your ear like a treasure map, and the Shen Men point is one of the treasure spots. In Chinese Medicine, people believe different spots on your ear connect to different parts of your body. The Shen Men point is special because it helps calm you down when you’re feeling worried, sad, or even just super busy. It’s like pressing a “chill-out” button for your body.

How Does It Work?

When you press the Shen Men point, it sends a signal to your brain which then tells your body to relax. It’s like telling your brain, “Hey, it’s okay to take a break now.” It slows down your heartbeat, helps your muscles feel less tight, and makes you feel more balanced, like when you’re in an up-swing mode and everything feels just right.

How to Use the Shen Men Point

Here’s how you can try it yourself:

  1. Find the Spot:
Look at your ear. Now, find the little fold at the top part of your ear’s outer edge. There’s a small dent near the middle—that’s where the Shen Men point is!
  2. Press Gently:
Use your fingers to press on that spot. Start with soft pressure, like you’re petting a puppy, then you can press a little harder and to your tolerance.
  3. Breathe Like a Dragon:
While you’re pressing, take deep breaths. Imagine you’re a dragon, slowly blowing out fire. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold it for 4 seconds, and then breathe out for 4 seconds. This helps you feel even calmer.
  4. Hold for a Minute:
Keep pressing and breathing for about 2 or 3 minutes. That’s it! You’ll notice you feel a little lighter, like you let go of a heavy backpack.

Why is This Helpful?

The Shen Men point is like having a secret magic trick in your pocket. You don’t need any tools or fancy devices. You can use it when you’re feeling overwhelmed or even when you can’t sleep. It’s quick, easy, and works like a charm.
