Navigating the Holidays Healthy and Happy
Rosemarie Allen • December 8, 2023

The holiday season is a time for joy, celebration, and, unfortunately, for some, stress and unhealthy habits. With all the parties, rich food, and late nights, it can be easy to let your health take a backseat. However, by following a few simple tips, you can enjoy the holidays without sacrificing your well-being.

Make Healthy Food Choices

Focus on Fruits, Vegetables, and Whole Grains: These nutrient-rich foods should be the foundation of your holiday meals. Fill your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables, and choose whole-grain breads, pastas, and cereals.

Limit Processed Foods, Sugary Drinks, and Unhealthy Fats: These foods are often high in calories, sugar, and unhealthy fats, which can contribute to weight gain, fatigue, and other health problems.

Indulge in Moderation: While it's okay to enjoy your favorite holiday treats, do so in moderation. A piece of pie or a few cookies won't derail your healthy eating habits, but overindulging can.

Stay Active

Incorporate Physical Activity into Your Holiday Celebrations: Take a walk or bike ride with family and friends, play a game of active charades, or dance around the Christmas tree.

Find Ways to Be Active Even When You're Indoors: Take the stairs instead of the elevator, do some jumping jacks during commercials, or follow a workout video at home.

Aim for at Least 30 Minutes of Moderate-Intensity Exercise Most Days of the Week: Exercise helps to boost your mood, reduce stress, and maintain a healthy weight.

Manage Stress

Make Time for Relaxing Activities: Schedule some time for yourself to relax and de-stress each day. You can spend time in nature, listen to music or take a warm bath.

Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness techniques, such as yoga and meditation, can help you to focus on the present moment and reduce stress.

Don't Be Afraid to Say No: It's okay to say no to things that you don't have time for or that will add to your stress level.

Get Enough Sleep

Aim for 7-8 Hours of Sleep Each Night: When you're well-rested, you're better able to cope with stress and make healthy choices.

Establish a Regular Sleep Schedule and Stick to It as Much as Possible, Even on Weekends: Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day helps to regulate your body's natural sleep-wake cycle.

Establish a Calming Bedtime Ritual:To ensure a good night's sleep, it's crucial to establish a calming bedtime routine such as a bedtime meditation, reading a calming or deep breathing exercise can all signal your body that it's time to wind down and prepare for rest.

Limit Alcohol Intake

Alcohol can interfere with your sleep and make it difficult to make healthy choices.

If you do drink alcohol, do so in moderation.

Alternate Alcoholic Drinks with Non-Alcoholic Drinks.

Consider Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine technique that has been used for over 2,000 years. It involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body, known as acupoints. These acupoints are believed to lie along energy channels, or meridians, that carry “qi” throughout the body. Acupuncture has been shown to be effective for a variety of conditions, including anxiety, stress, and depression.

See Your Doctor

It's important to see your doctor for regular checkups, even during the holidays.

Your doctor can help you to stay healthy and on track with your health goals.

By following these tips, you can enjoy the holidays without sacrificing your health. Make healthy choices, stay active, manage stress, get enough sleep, and limit your alcohol intake. Your body will thank you for it all.
